Lamb Gyro Plate

Lamb Gyro Plate is Mediterranean home cooking, eaten at dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.

60 min Involved

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb ground lamb
  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 4 pita breads
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1/2 red onion
  • 1.5 tsp salt

How to cook it

  1. Heat the oven to 325F.
  2. Pulse the onion in a food processor and squeeze out the liquid, then process it with the lamb, beef, garlic, oregano, cumin, and salt into a smooth paste.
  3. Press the mixture into a loaf pan and bake until firm and cooked through, about 40 minutes, then rest and slice it thinly.
  4. Grate the cucumber, squeeze it dry, and stir it into the yogurt with the lemon juice and a pinch of salt to make tzatziki.
  5. Warm the pita breads.
  6. Serve the sliced gyro meat with the tzatziki, chopped tomatoes, red onion, and warm pita.
