Thai Basil Chicken
Thai Basil Chicken is Thai home cooking, eaten at lunch and dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lb ground chicken
- 2 cups Thai basil leaves
- 6 garlic cloves
- 4 Thai chilies
- 2 tbsp fish sauce
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp neutral oil
- 4 cups cooked jasmine rice
How to cook it
- Pound the garlic and chilies into a rough paste.
- Stir the fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and brown sugar together in a small bowl.
- Heat the oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat and fry the garlic and chili paste for 20 seconds.
- Add the ground chicken and stir-fry, breaking it up, until browned and cooked through, about 6 minutes.
- Pour in the sauce and toss until it coats the chicken and turns glossy, about 1 minute.
- Kill the heat, fold in the Thai basil until just wilted, and serve over the jasmine rice.

When to cook it
Thai Basil Chicken takes about 25 minutes from a cold stove to the table, and the cooking itself is easy going. It is eaten at lunch and dinner. Nothing in the calendar rules it out, so it is a year round dish.
