Plain Steamed Rice

Ingredients

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 3.5 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp salt

How to cook it

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until it runs clear, then drain.
  2. Combine the rice, water, and salt in a pot and bring to a boil.
  3. Cover and cook on low until the water is absorbed, about 12 minutes, then rest 5 minutes and fluff with a fork before serving.

Serve it with

A North Indian dinner is a plate rather than a single dish. These are the courses that normally sit beside Plain Steamed Rice, read from the same composition Dinejot builds a real meal from.

When to cook it

Plain Steamed Rice takes about 25 minutes from a cold stove to the table, and the cooking itself is easy going. It is eaten at lunch and dinner. Nothing in the calendar rules it out, so it is a year round dish.
