Gyudon Beef Rice Bowl

Gyudon Beef Rice Bowl is Japanese home cooking, eaten at lunch and dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.

20 min Easy Dairy free

Ingredients

  • 1.25 lb thinly sliced beef
  • 1 onion
  • 1 cup dashi stock
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp grated ginger
  • 5 cups cooked white rice
  • 3 scallions

How to cook it

  1. Bring the dashi, soy sauce, sugar, and ginger to a simmer in a skillet.
  2. Add the sliced onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the thinly sliced beef and simmer, separating the pieces, until cooked through, about 5 minutes.
  4. Let the beef soak up the sauce for a couple of minutes off direct heat.
  5. Spoon the beef and onion over bowls of warm rice with some of the broth.
  6. Top with scallions and serve.
