Margherita Pizza

Margherita Pizza is Italian home cooking, eaten at dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.

40 min Medium Vegetarian Halal Pescatarian

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pizza dough
  • 1 cup crushed San Marzano tomatoes
  • 12 oz fresh mozzarella
  • 1 cup fresh basil
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 garlic cloves

How to cook it

  1. Heat the oven to 500F with a baking sheet or stone inside.
  2. Stretch the dough into a 14-inch round on parchment.
  3. Mix the crushed tomatoes with the minced garlic and salt, then spread over the dough, leaving a border.
  4. Dot with mozzarella and drizzle with olive oil.
  5. Bake until the crust is blistered and the cheese bubbles, about 10 to 12 minutes.
  6. Scatter fresh basil over the hot pizza before slicing.

When to cook it

Margherita Pizza takes about 40 minutes from a cold stove to the table, and the cooking itself is a fair bit of work. It is eaten at dinner. It is at its best in summer, which is when what goes into it is worth buying.
