Baked Ziti
Baked Ziti is Italian home cooking, eaten at dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ziti
- 1 lb ground beef
- 3 cups marinara sauce
- 15 oz ricotta
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan
- 1 large egg
- 3 garlic cloves
- 1/2 onion
- 1/4 cup chopped basil
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
How to cook it
- Heat the oven to 375F and cook the ziti until just shy of al dente, about 8 minutes, then drain.
- Brown the beef with the onion and garlic in the olive oil, about 8 minutes, then stir in the marinara.
- Mix the ricotta with the egg, parmesan, basil, and salt.
- Combine the pasta with the meat sauce, then fold in half the ricotta mixture.
- Spread in a baking dish, dot with the remaining ricotta, and cover with mozzarella.
- Bake until bubbling and golden, about 30 minutes.

When to cook it
Baked Ziti takes about 60 minutes from a cold stove to the table, and the cooking itself is a fair bit of work. It is eaten at dinner. Nothing in the calendar rules it out, so it is a year round dish.
