Haferbrei (German Oat Porridge)
Haferbrei (German Oat Porridge) is German home cooking, eaten at breakfast. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsweetened oat milk
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/2 apple, grated
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
How to cook it
- Combine the oats, water, oat milk, and salt in a small saucepan.
- Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, stirring often, for 5 minutes, until thick and creamy.
- Remove from the heat and let stand for 1 minute to thicken further.
- Stir in the grated apple and cinnamon.
- Spoon into a bowl and drizzle with the maple syrup before serving.

When to cook it
Haferbrei (German Oat Porridge) takes about 10 minutes from a cold stove to the table, and the cooking itself is easy going. It is eaten at breakfast. Nothing in the calendar rules it out, so it is a year round dish.
Watch someone make it
Nothing loads from YouTube until you press play. Until then this is one still image, which is why the page opens as quickly as it does.
