Masoor Dal (Red Lentil)
Masoor Dal (Red Lentil) is North Indian home cooking, eaten at lunch and dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre, the protein alongside, and the soup. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.
Ingredients
- 1.5 cups masoor dal (split red lentils)
- 4.5 cups water
- 3/4 tsp turmeric
- 1 onion
- 2 tomato
- 4 garlic cloves
- 1 tbsp grated ginger
- 2 green chilies
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 3 tbsp neutral oil
- 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
- 1 tsp salt
How to cook it
- Rinse the red lentils and simmer them with the turmeric, salt, and water until soft and broken down, about 20 minutes.
- Whisk the dal smooth and keep it warm and brothy.
- Heat the oil in a pan and let the cumin seeds sizzle, then cook the garlic, ginger, and green chilies for a minute.
- Add the onion and cook until soft, then stir in the tomato, coriander, and red chili powder and cook until the tomato melts down.
- Pour the tempering into the dal, simmer for 5 minutes, finish with cilantro, and serve.
