Frikadellen (German Pan-Fried Beef Patties)

Frikadellen (German Pan-Fried Beef Patties) is German home cooking, eaten at lunch and dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.

30 min Easy Halal

Ingredients

  • 1 stale bread roll
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1.5 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil

How to cook it

  1. Soak the bread roll in the milk for 5 minutes until softened, then squeeze out the excess liquid.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, softened bread, onion, egg, mustard, parsley, nutmeg, salt, and pepper, and mix gently with your hands until just combined.
  3. Shape the mixture into 8 oval patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
  4. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat and fry the patties for 5 to 6 minutes per side, until deeply browned and cooked through.
  5. Drain briefly on paper towels and serve warm, or chill and eat cold on bread the next day the way Germans do with leftovers.
