Ingredients

  • 30 oz canned black beans
  • 3/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

How to cook it

  1. Drain and rinse the black beans, then mash about three-quarters of them in a bowl, leaving some whole for texture.
  2. Mix in the breadcrumbs, oats, grated onion, garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper until it holds together, adding a splash of water if dry.
  3. Shape into 4 patties and chill 10 minutes to firm up.
  4. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium and cook the patties until browned and crisp, about 4 minutes per side.
  5. Toast the buns.
  6. Build the burgers with your favorite toppings such as lettuce, tomato, and avocado.
