Tater Tot Casserole

Tater Tot Casserole is American home cooking, eaten at dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.

60 min Medium

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 2 10.5 oz cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar
  • 1.5 lb frozen tater tots
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

How to cook it

  1. Heat the oven to 375F.
  2. Brown the ground beef with the onion and garlic in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high, then drain off excess fat and season with the garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, milk, and mixed vegetables until combined, then smooth into an even layer.
  4. Scatter half the cheddar over the beef, then arrange the tater tots in tidy rows on top.
  5. Bake until the tots are crisp and golden, about 40 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle on the remaining cheddar and bake 5 minutes more until melted, then serve.

When to cook it

Tater Tot Casserole takes about 60 minutes from a cold stove to the table, and the cooking itself is a fair bit of work. It is eaten at dinner. Nothing in the calendar rules it out, so it is a year round dish.
