Sloppy Joes
Sloppy Joes is American home cooking, eaten at dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lb ground beef
- 6 hamburger buns
- 1 onion
- 1 bell pepper
- 3 garlic cloves
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
How to cook it
- Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up, about 6 minutes, then drain excess fat.
- Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire, brown sugar, and mustard along with 1/2 cup water.
- Simmer until thick and saucy, about 8 minutes, then season with salt and pepper.
- Toast the buns and spoon the beef mixture onto the bottoms.
- Close the sandwiches and serve.
Serve it with
A American dinner is a plate rather than a single dish. These are the courses that normally sit beside Sloppy Joes, read from the same composition Dinejot builds a real meal from.

When to cook it
Sloppy Joes takes about 30 minutes from a cold stove to the table, and the cooking itself is easy going. It is eaten at dinner. Nothing in the calendar rules it out, so it is a year round dish.
