Kerala Parippu Curry (Simple Moong Dal Curry)
Kerala Parippu Curry (Simple Moong Dal Curry) is South Indian home cooking, eaten at lunch and dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre and the protein alongside. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.
Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow moong dal (split, husked)
- 3.5 cups water
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 cup grated coconut
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 3 garlic cloves
- 2 shallots (or onion)
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 2 dried red chilies
- 10 curry leaves
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp salt
How to cook it
- Rinse the moong dal and pressure cook it with the turmeric and water until soft and mushy, about 3 whistles, then mash lightly.
- Grind the coconut, cumin, and garlic into a coarse paste and stir it into the mashed dal with the salt, simmering for 5 minutes.
- Heat the coconut oil in a small pan and fry the shallots until golden.
- Add the mustard seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves and let them sizzle.
- Pour the tempering over the dal and serve warm, the simplest and most comforting dal on the everyday Kerala plate.
Serve it with
A South Indian dinner is a plate rather than a single dish. These are the courses that normally sit beside Kerala Parippu Curry (Simple Moong Dal Curry), read from the same composition Dinejot builds a real meal from.

When to cook it
Kerala Parippu Curry (Simple Moong Dal Curry) takes about 30 minutes from a cold stove to the table, and the cooking itself is easy going. It is eaten at lunch and dinner. Nothing in the calendar rules it out, so it is a year round dish.
