American
French Toast
French Toast is American home cooking, eaten at breakfast. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.
Ingredients
- 8 thick bread slices
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (alcohol-free)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
How to cook it
- Whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon in a shallow dish.
- Melt some butter on a griddle over medium heat.
- Dip each slice of bread in the custard for a few seconds per side, letting the excess drip off.
- Cook until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes per side, adding butter as needed.
- Serve hot with maple syrup.
Serve it with
A American breakfast is a plate rather than a single dish. These are the courses that normally sit beside French Toast, read from the same composition Dinejot builds a real meal from.

When to cook it
French Toast takes about 20 minutes from a cold stove to the table, and the cooking itself is a fair bit of work. It is eaten at breakfast. Nothing in the calendar rules it out, so it is a year round dish.
