Compote de Pommes (French Apple Compote)
Compote de Pommes (French Apple Compote) is French home cooking, eaten at breakfast. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.
Ingredients
- 2 lb apples (such as Golden Delicious or Braeburn), peeled, cored and chopped
- 1/4 cup water
- 3 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
How to cook it
- Put the chopped apples, water, sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon in a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Cover and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are completely soft.
- Remove from the heat and mash the apples with a fork or potato masher to the texture you like, chunky or smooth.
- Taste and stir in a little more sugar if the apples are tart.
- Serve the compote warm or chilled; a small bowl on its own is a genuine simple breakfast, especially for kids.

When to cook it
